00:15:00 - WelMac meeting...
ehintz did a good presentation on behalf of his employer at WelMac meeting this evening.
Good overview of iMac G5, including disassembly, and "one finger" tilt adjustment demo. Discussion if it would end up on the floor in an earthquake: probably not. Did turn it on too - but a bit limited by the Projector, and had to run at less than optimal screen res.
Also demo'd an iPod shuffle. There had been some discussion on it prior to Ed's reveal, but David had crushed his cardboard mock up -- and all hope of seeing one in the flesh was gone when Ed did a "oh, and one more thing..." Kate tried to convince us that she was a good candidate for a free one, but got a MagnumMac coffee mug instead - which she traded to Shane for some undisclosed favours later in the meeting.
Just as all hope was beginning to fade, and people were thinking of resorting to Graeme's green tinged iCab archive of Apple's spec page on the mac mini, Ed did a "just one more thing" thing, and pulled a Mac mini out his rucksack. The only Mac mini in Wellington probably - so we didn;t dare see if could be opened up. Nice cute little thing. I almost snapped a photo of Kate stroking it and crooning, but wasn't quick enough. Ed / David did a demo of the iLife '05 apps, and Kate got restless for the coffee and chocolate biscuits. My Cafenet died about 4 times - maybe the 6 people using it from the back of the meeting was too much? I was chatting with
blkleatherkitty for part of it, and generally catching up on my email.. DBD lost his Cafenet password (the website redesign has resulted in a few autofil passwords not working) so I lent him my login for a few seconds to allow his to get the new password via email.
Had a couple of Clamshell iBooks in the meeting (for sale) and Kate wanted one. As usual. No $$ tho. She played with one instead to ease the boredom.
After the meeting (which involved no air conditioning and a lecture room full of people) we got to play with the merchandise and discuss pricing. I sure hope Ed gets paid for his time :)
A couple of G3 iMac's sprouted down the back and my double adpater in the one and only power point got some serious usage - so serious in fact that I keft it there because it was still in use. The iMacs had problems - mainly no OS X booting. OS 9 doesn't quite cut it these days.
All in all a good night. Managed to get home by 11 ish. Was meant to be home by nine, but Ed was so good ;)
A few selected snaps over at http://nzmac.org/mtg-20050131/mtg-20050131.html if you're keen. I look ick and "at work" as well as hot and sweaty due to lack of Air conditioning. Love the shot of the hoisted iMac G5 - but autofocus didn't quite get it right. Maybe I need to actually sit closer to the action - rather than being a "Back row boy"
