God Encamps Around Us Forever
Psalm 91:4
Pastor Carl H Stevens

When we see how God poured His mercy and grace on our lives based on His essence, His plan and the finished work of Christ, we can plan on His grace being the only policy toward us in the future. "Surely (meaning 'only') goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23:6). If God loved us when we were rebellious, ungodly men to the point where He sent His Son to be condemned and die on our behalf, how much more will He now keep us, preserve us and freely give us all things?

Our future is as sure as what God has accomplished already for us in the past in the gift of His Son. In other words, "Tis grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home." Whatever you may face in the coming days will be covered by God's hand. You can rest in confidence and assurance for all time and eternity because, "He will cover you with his feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart" (Psalm 91:4, NIV).

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Psalm 91:4

22:22:00 - mostly recs

this has been an extremely odd week. i've barely left the flat and not got much done. not going to dwell on that. so instead i'll mention a few recs.

i believe i've mentioned before that [info]i_claudia writes the most amazing things. check out revolutionary (arthur/merlin, nc-17, 2160words). it's victorian!au and beautiful. i haven't the words to tell you how wonderful it is, so i'll just quote the line everyone else has been in the comments Joy and sorrow mix together in a roiling boil under Merlin’s skin, seething just beneath calm movements, more addictive than the best opium India can produce. i mean can you really stand to miss such glorious writing?

and then today [info]glimmergirl wrote this stunning piece, the curving east (arthur/merlin, r-ish, ~2300words). it's a future!fic. [info]glimmergirl writing is so beautiful, almost like a painting. i can't describe it, but i can quote it. Arthur recognizes the sensation immediately with an awareness that is as deep as blood, bone, and breath inside him; he recognizes himself in the thrum that is more than his own heartbeat, but the beat of life and magic in the air, the ground, the water around him, the flame that spreads beneath his skin and glows gold and great in Merlin's eyes. guh. see what i mean?

and here's a cute noble!arthur fic by [info]jett_chan. this is her first merlin fic that was inspired by s2e7 and almost-in-tears!merlin. says the summary Inspired by a flood of misty!Merlin pics. Every time Colin Morgan cries, humanity gets a step closer to world peace. Damn that boy and his pretty, pretty tears.

as long as i'm reccing, take a gander at this vid, until you're king (arthur/merlin). it's one with an actual (angsty) storyline instead of just pics, and i thought the vidder did a good job rearranging s2e6 footage.

don't forget to tell them all how much you enjoyed it.

18:45:00 - Get rid of roaches with Arbor Mist

I swear, the roaches in my apartment are immune to borax and boric acid- I've sugar-coated them and watched them walk around for HOURS without issues. So much for THAT method. And I've put tons of those roach bait traps around, and I've never seen a roach go near one. Ever. Fail on that one. I have cats, and I've had cats die before after pest control sprayed for bugs, so I'm a little leery of going the liquid chemical route. Our landlord refuses to hire someone to do it anyways.

I don't have a job, so I've got nothing to do but clean and blog. Guess what I do a lot of. Yep- cleaning. I'd say the place is not the most habitable to roaches. However, they're living in the walls and I suspect festering in the neighbours' apartment, coming in through the hole in the shared wall by the oven. They're everywhere, and I was FED UP.

Then I discovered something. I was taking a break from laundry and poured myself some deliciously cold champagne. Drank almost all of it, left a little in the bottom of the mug (no, I'm not going to bother with proper champagne glasses mid-day. Mugs I can put in the dishwasher!) Forgot about it and left it on the counter while cleaning the bedroom. Came back hours later. Check glass. Dead roaches floating in it. A lot of them.

AHA!

Sugary liquids draw them like mad- crappy $5 Arbor Mist strawberry wine has more than enough sugars to draw them. And because of the alcohol content, they drown and die off! w00t! All you need is a 25 cent thrift store mug and a bottle of Arbor Mist, or something similarly sweet and cheap. I recommend getting a small cup different from any other you own strictly for this purpose, and make sure it's small so that smaller roaches have no trouble climbing it and finding the alcohol. I used a small teacup and about 1/8c of sweet wine each time. I let it sit out for a day or two before rinsing it out and pouring a new glass. So far, I think I've killed about 30 roaches today, not counting the ones I killed without the alcohol.

Alcohol FTW.

13:34:00 - A Fine Start

It's twenty past one on Saturday afternoon and I'm already feeling accomplished.

So far this weekend I have:

Last night I read The Time of the Dark by Barbara Hambly. It's a standard fantasy novel, but it is well done and I found myself paying more attention to the descriptions than I normally do. I'm looking forward to the next two in the series. Another advantage to staying at someone else's place is that you get to read their books.

Speaking of which, it's the end of our first week in Hataitai and so far it's going well although I'd much rather be in a new house in Northland. Last night we tried out the local chippy and I thought it was pretty good (fish gets 8/10, chips closer to a 6/10), followed by a dessert of chocolates from the local chocolatier, Bohemein.

The best bit about not sharing a place is that Kim and I get an entire fridge to ourselves, but I kind of miss my flatmates.

Book #83 -- Elizabeth Mavor, The Ladies of Llangollen, 216 pages.

In 1778, Eleanor Butler, 39, and Sarah Ponsonby, 23, eloped. With each other. The two women set up house in a cottage near Llangollen, Wales, and lived there together until their deaths, over 50 years later. The Ladies of Llangollen, as they became known, attracted the interest and friendship of many of the influential figures of the times, from royalty to poets and scientists. Wordsworth wrote poetry while staying in their cottage, and they were great friends with the Duke of Wellington. Whether or not the two ladies enjoyed a sexual relationship is (and probably forever will be) a matter of speculation. But that they enjoyed a romantic relationship, and behaved in all ways as if married to each other, is a matter of fact. Their simple way of life, their humour and strong opinions, and their devotion to one another shines clearly through Sarah's account book and Eleanor's journals, as well as their voluminous joint correspondence. Elizabeth Mavor brings it all together in this wonderful biography of two extraordinary women, far ahead of their time.

08:56:00 - Unpaid Internships

This article popped up through a government small business mailing list I'm on.

Thought it might be helpful for students to have an idea of what they should expect from an unpaid internship:
http://community2.business.gov/t5/Business-Law-Advisor/The-Truth-Behind-Unpaid-Internships/ba-p/9340#A270?cm_mmc=GovDelivery-_-111209-_-weekly-_-community

Or a paid internship:

Knowing the law behind something can help you spot whether or not it's hinky. Internships are a really great way to gain some experience and get your foot in the door...particularly in certain industries. You just want to make sure that you're not being abused in the process.

Yesterday out of "I missed the bus" boredom, I went to my old high school for a visit and catch up with some of my old favorite teachers, ie. Mrs. McKenzie and Ms. Sutherland. It turned out Ms. Sutherland was away so I got Mr. Maskill instead, but still, it was lovely catching up, not to mention a lot easier than the last time I dropped in, as with the seniors on exam leave, they all had less classes they should have been in.

22:56:00 - Can't Do It All? Do Something!

Do something! Anything. Big or small. Just start already! You may think if you can't do it all you may as well do nothing. However even your smallest task may mean the world to someone else. Listen to this story I read about in a devotional from Max Lucado a while back. If you don't believe small contributions matter just ask Lovett Ivey.

Lovett Ivey was a pilot during World War II and was flying a B-17 during a fight. His tank had been hit by Nazi antiaircraft guns. Even though his gas tanks were hit, they didn't explode and he was able to limp back to his carrier and land safely.

The next morning Lovett went to the ship technicians who were reviewing the damaged aircraft and told them he wanted the shell that hit him to keep as a souvenir of what should have been his last flight. The crew chief explained that not one, but eleven rounds had hit the gas tank. Lovett gasped, knowing he should not be here now.

The crew opened the missiles and found them all to be missing the explosive charge needed to blow up the target. They were all harmless and empty except one. This one missile contained a tightly rolled piece of paper. On it was a message scrawled in German. It simply said " This is all I can do for you now".

Wow! A German assembly line worker disarming missiles scribbled the note and placed it inside one of the missiles. He knew he couldn't end the war, but maybe he could save one plane. He couldn't do it all, but he could do SOMETHING.

Lovett Ivey learned that day somewhere in the Atlantic ocean how God could take our small tasks, our small offerings and make them big. Really big. He can do something really special with our offerings if we only begin.

What have you been putting off doing? What problem seems insurmountable to you? It may seem insurmountable to you, but not to God. Is the clutter in your home driving you crazy? Is your to do pile much bigger than your completed pile at work? Has you been procrastinating about an apology you owe someone because you fear how they may react? He can do wonders with whatever we entrust to Him. We must begin somewhere. Do something. Do anything.

Like the familiar adage says " How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" Go ahead and start today. God will do the rest!

(Note: I couldn't remember the name of the pilot or some of the specific details as Max Lucado wrote in his devotional, so I added my own details as best I could remember them. The name Lovett Ivey was actually a family member of mine who was a pilot in World War II. Even though some of the details may vary, the general story should be credited to Max Lucado.)

PS- A note to every veteran in the US who has ever served in any capacity so that I may continue to enjoy the freedoms in this country we all have for many centuries------ a heartfelt thank you. Thank you for your service. May God bless you and yours.

19:22:00 - How can I keep my mom alive and get her the medical help she will die without?

This is a matter of life and death, and I wish I was kidding.

My mom has a very large tumor in her chest, and we can't do anything about it. It's bad enough that she's in the hospital through the ER every 2 to 4 weeks, and they said it needs to be taken out. Her last ER/hosp trip they found out the tumor has a tumor growing on it now. It's not cancerous, so if they can get it out, she'll have a recovery period the doctors estimate for 6 weeks, and then she'll be okay. Left alone, it's expected to kill her within months. We've been dealing with this for a year, with the first tumor diagnosed in March. The county where she lives has a very small, inadequate hospital that doesn't have the equipment or any doctors with the skills to remove this particular tumor. The hospital that's nearest that can is in another county. She can't get in the doors of that other hospital without insurance or Medi-Cal. She tried once by ambulance, and was transferred back to the small hospital 100 miles away after being stabilized.

The doctors had her apply for disability since she can't work, and she was denied. An attorney took it on on contingency, but today she got a decision on the court appeal and the court denied it. So she gets nothing. The social security office says she's well enough to be working full time, and the judge sided with them even her doctors, the ones who are professional, and her medical history since last summer show she can't. How can someone work when about a third of her time is spent hospitalized with the doctors struggling to stabilize her so she doesn't die and can live another week?

What she has now is a county coverage that only covers doctors in her county. No where else. The doctors she's seeing have tried getting her in the doors at the larger hospital, but can't.

She's under 65, not considered disabled even though she really is, isn't pregnant, or anything else, so she doesn't qualify for Medi-Cal or Medicare. She also has been turned down for private insurance. If she was accepted anyway, we don't know how the premium would have been paid since I'm not floating with extra dollars either, but I'd find a way. But she was denied anyway so it doesn't matter. I've applied for her for every medical insurance company in the northern California region.

She lives in Merced County right now, and the hospital she needs to be in is in San Mateo County, if this makes a difference at all. She worked until she not too sick last summer, a nurse for 25 years who now can't get medical help and will die, the doctors are surprised she hasn't died yet but she's close. It's really dire. She's wasting away from her organs shutting down from these tumors. On a "good" day, her weight goes up to 95 pounds, which is too little for 5'5".

What are some options for us/her, or do we have to accept she's just going to have to die?

Some suggestions made we'll try
Contacting congressmen
Trying the media, already submitted to Good Morning America on someone's suggestion
Trying Fresno's Community Memorial, and I now have some calls in waiting to hear back

I've given more information that I feel comfortable with, like my mom's location and occupation, and the hospital that can treat her and won't, hospitals she's been to, and why her disability claims were denied, even though it makes no sense how the court thinks she can work when her doctors say she can't. I know this is a new journal. I found this place by a google search for poor people and medical help. We exhausted every option we could think of on our own and from suggestions of people we know, and brick wall after brick wall is why I decided to ask publicly and online in case anyone had ideas no one we know thought of.

No one questions the cases in the media when a cancer patient is dying and can't get medical care no matter how hard they try, but I've been called a liar in the comments because my mom's sotry is just as dire. I don't care if anyone thinks that. If I can get a suggestion that works and saved her life, then what does it really matter is a few strangers think I'm lying? It's desperation that's even made me come online to ask for ideas. I wish this was all something made up. No one should die because they don't have money. But cancer patients die from not having any, and who says they're lying? People die all the time from not being able to get medical care. Getting aid requires more than being poor and having no assets. If that's all it took, don't you think every poor adult out there would have government coverage? Wouldn't you all have coverage if you only had to be poor and own very little?

My mom has no money or assets, and I'm living at the povery level, and we both eat from food kitchens and pantries. I send all money I can to help her. That's what being poor is. It's not having enough or a lot. if we had the money to pay for this, we wouldn't be poor. So just give suggestions. That's all I'm asking for, and they're free to give.

22:51:00 - Packing Lunches for Grown-Ups!

I really have tried looking, so I thought I'd seek input.

I'm finally moving in with my husband, after being forced to shell out 950 dollars a month in room and board on campus for the time up until our marriage. The agreement with him is that I pay for and prepare all foods, something he's not exactly the greatest at (and has been living on fast food). As we all know here, fast food is very expensive, especially when the costs start to add up.

Since neither of us will be at home at one set time for lunch, packing seems like the best option. We both will have access to microwave and refrigerating facilities.

So, what makes a good, cheap, packed lunch for someone older than 10? And please don't suggest lunch meat sandwiches unless you have a tip on making them cheaper, lunch meat is actually surprisingly expensive compared to the costs of most any kind of meat, and it's a pretty obvious option anyway.

So, share with us your recipes, any interesting links, any ideas, any suggestions, anything related to the process of lunch packing! Heck, I'll even take suggestions for things that reheat well.

13:11:00 - savings?

My budget is pretty tight, but I really want to be able to save money.

I can spare a little each paycheck to put into a savings account, but being that I most likely would be starting it with a different bank than my own(to prevent me from being able to transfer easily), I know a lot of banks have minimums for that.

Anyone know of a good bank I can use to build up a savings account that doesn't require a minimum? Also, is it even a good idea to start an account like that in this economy?

Valid signature verification is required to use the card.

This PDF explains what product lines are eligible and other details. They are only issuing cards for two more months, but the cards last for 6 months after you get them. Cards issued in December are good until 6/30, and cards issued in January are good until 7/31.

I don't do much shopping at Kmart, but I get a lot of the Great Value stuff at Walmart, and can tell you that most store brands are as good or nearly as good as the name brands. 20% off STORE brand can save you A TON off the name brands.

10:50:00 - New bank rule on overdrafts

This isn't really a poor skill but I think it will help those who live day to day with double digits or single digits in bank accounts and are always so close to $0 that accidental overdrafts just happen sometimes.

It happens to even the best of us. You forget to put something in the ledger, and next thing you know, that gallon of milk you paid $3 for with your debit card is over $30 with overdraft fees, eating away half your food budget for the week, or maybe all of it.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091112/ap_on_bi_ge/us_fed_overdraft_fees

Now the new rule, which takes effect July 1, banks will be required to have customers opt in for overdraft protection on debit transactions. Electronic payments and checks, which are used most for big bills like rent, can still go through and get an overdraft without opting in, but for regular debit transactions, they'll just be declined unless you opt in.

So there will be some relief for us starting next summer.

18:26:00 - Angel Food Online Ordering

Due to suddenly extremely straitened financial circumstances, my family is looking toward Angel Food Minitries for help, based on so many of your excellent recommendations here! However, with two adults working long hours and no car, I somehow can't envision myself maneuvering pounds and pounds of food all the way across the borough(s) (there's only one distribution site in Manhattan, where I live) after dark, when I'm off work. How does this "online ordering" thing work? Will they deliver, or is it just a more stream-lined way to pick it up yourself? Of course, this is all a moot point because I can't find anywhere even remotely local that even allows for "online ordering"...

I'm sure I sound like a spoiled Manhattanite, but it's been a horrible, stressful week of finding out that we have much, much less disposable income than I have been led to believe for the last two years. So please, please be kind. Thank you so so much for any advice you can offer - I really appreciate it :)

19:57:00 - Christmas presents on the cheap!

I know this type of thing has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything offhand...if I overlooked something, maybe somebody could point me to a link.

I am wanting to possibly make little bath sets for people for Christmas. I don't really have a lot of spare money this year, and I'd like to do something creative that doesn't require a lot of money going into it. I was thinking of doing like little baskets with soaps, bath salts, bath oils, etc. so forth. I looked around online for kits that would come with the molds and glycerin and oils and everything...but I can't find any kits that make more than 6 of anything. I am thinking maybe it would be cheaper to buy things separately, but not having done this before, I'm really unsure. There is a Joann Fabrics craft store in my area that would probably have some of the things I need, but I figure it'll be relatively expensive. Is there a place online that is reasonably priced? And does anyone have enough experience with this type of thing to recommend to me what I should or should not get? Thanks in advance!

20:40:00 - tivo, aging, travel fic

so i thought i'd plug the tivo into the tv just to see if it would talk to it at all, which it will. yays! and the last owners had kids and thus parent controls turned on. which tivo reverts to if turned off. and you need a password to get out. so currently i can watch a bunch of recorded disney and nick shows. wah. according to the website i can get customer service to help me reset it, but i'm sure i'll have to be ready to plunk down my money for the service. so i haven't called yet.

did end up watching high school musical though. they were so ickle then and cute as little kittens. am still impressed by the choreography and the franchise in general. though by the end of the trilogy the characters were certainly more rounded.

i read a short trashy romance today that was set in europe and have decided [info]coffeejunkii needs to write an rpf where colin and bradley go to germany for some reason and take the readers on a tour of part of germany with them [*grins*]

want to see some clever makeup and camera work? check out vogue paris' article that takes a 20-yr-old model and takes pictures of her that represent her for every decade from age ten to sixty. it's worth a look.

er, sorry, random post is random.

11:54:00 - Friday the 13th book rec

So my latest book jag/addiction is Rachel Caine's The Morganville Vampire series. They are really good little reads and spades better than Twilight. Paige and I are totally addicted and spend hours talking about them and discussing theories, their love lives and who might be a bad guy or a traitor or really a good guy pretending to be a bad guy.

They are fun, I really recommend them. They are quick reads, you can easily get through one a day and they follow on directly from each other. I suggest though if you do read them through you buy all of them at once because each ends in a cliffe that the next book starts directly on from it, so if you are anything like us you won't be able to wait for the next YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

The basic premise is there is this town called dun dun dun Morganville and it's run by Vampires. It's secluded from the rest of the world and if you leave it you forget that there are such things as Vamps or how nutty the town is, the thing is though once you're in it's pretty hard to leave. It's one of it's many secrets. There is a University in the town which attracts students of whom 10 percent or something are taxed to the vamps who free range graze off them like cattle. The rest of the town, the residents and long timers, all belong to protectors or vamps who own them, they are taxed some of their income and regular blood deposits and they are protected and left alone.

The heroine of the story Claire comes to the University as a student and quickly discovers something is amok, she ends up leaving the campus and living with three others Michael, Shane and Eve (who I just love) teens in the glass house. Vampire hijinks, revolutions and shenanigans then ensue.

Her latest book fade out arrived today, it was released last week I think and I'm about to dive in. I'm kind of in love with one of her characters called Myrnin and I'm totally shipping him and Claire even though she's Shane's girlfriend. There is some definite UST going on there. I wonder if she allows fanfic because Myrnin and Claire are my new OTP. I noticed on her livejournal profile [info]rachelcaine she says she writes fanfic so I am hopeful! brb searching fanfic.net for Morganville Vampires.

I also love that she puts playlists in the back of her books, I lolled because she had Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato hahah but she also has some really good songs on there and Walkie Talkie Man by Steriogram which is awesome and it's a Kiwi song and has the best music video ever.

So go read them!

13:53:00 - LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Perseverance

"Being confident of this very thing, that HE which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ"
Philippians 1:6 KJVRead more... )

Biblical success means two things: achieving what the Lord calls you to do and becoming the person He desires you to be. Seek His specific goals for your life. Persevering through obstacles will be a faith-building adventure that teaches you to depend on the Heavenly Father.
