15:52:00 - 48 Hours... only a few left.

Well, only a few hours left in 48 Hours competition.. the last stressful few hours.. waiting for rendering, but also relief, that it's almost over, and at least the safety is sitting at the hand-in desk in case the computers all die in the next 3 hours.

You may be an old school person, and have a physical radio on this weekend.. possibly not on the National Radio, for two reasons -
1. MoreFM is better (music wise)
2. National (RadioNZ) do podcasts of their programmes...

So in case you missed it Tim, the esteemed leader of Nitro, 'my' 48 Hours Team.. was interviewed for the Arts on Sunday program on national radio this afternoon.

The audio is here:

48 Hours

A preview of the 48 hour film making competion and a progress report on 2 of the project

Do go and subscribe to RadioNZ's podcasts - they have some great stuff!

01:48:00 - Useful Mail add-on

So iPhoto got updated (along with Mac OS X 10.4.9) so Keyword Assistant told me to get a new version. sure enough, my Safari RSS feed for "installed Apps" had a new entry for Keyword Assistant. Downloaded it, and noticed this bundle/plugin for Mail.app: called Mail Type Select. Allows you to type a phrase and then jump between emails that have that phrase. useful for only reading the emails directly addressed to you eg type 'jo@' and it finds them all.
Very cool.

16:09:00 - Multi-touch...

"Update: Yes, we saw the keynote too! We have some very, very exciting updates coming soon- stay tuned!"

Reviving this again, in light of the iPhone... I still want one, and yes the iPhone is a great example of consumer level use - but I do want a new "MacPanel Pro", a thin multi-touch screen running a new OS X, with wireless connectivity, onboard flash, with NAS or similar for the bigger stuff, making use of XGrid to do your work quickly and intuitively.

mmm. still waiting.

23:40:00 - A Night Surf.. Trolling List Archives...

I am not sure if I have understood the culture of VBScript right, but it may be a problem in terms of emergence of libraries without a master plan.

AHA; you have it! Without a master plan, you are headed for chaotic
incompatibles on a global scale, MUCH WORSE than what you lament today

I can't recall how it happened, but I ended up reading through the list archives for the WHAT WG this evening, and came across this one. I smiled.

Ok, that inspired me to find out how I ended up here. Scrolling back through some 342 pages of browser history - it seems it all started with a post to the TNC list. The Gadgets vs Widgets one:
http://list.thursdaynightcurry.com/mailman/private/wellington/2007-January/005526.html

In which I referenced David Pogues "Windows ISN'T copying OS X" video, To which Mr holloway.co.nz had already meantioned XUL - which piqued my interest in how Opera was coming along with SVG/XUL, and what the status of Canvas and SVG was with Apples Widgets... etc. Which brought me across a reference to "The WHAT" - which I Googled with useless results. -- but persisted and eventually got to the What working groups spec on Web Forms 2.0 - which seemed to be a little off track with what I thought the W3C where doing. I then found it had been submitted to the W3C.. and the submission was acknowledged with comments. - Intrigued I popped over to their mailing list archives and searched for W3C... and discovered a "discussion" ensued on their mailing list....

anyway - about 3 hours later, i'm still surfing. PJs, warm bed and all...

09:11:00 - AFP "enhancements"?

I'm living in hope Apple will give me back access from Tiger to that annoying AppleShare IP server in works' auckland office - so I don't have to keep silent about the fact that my "unsupported" Tiger install brings up a "Incompatible Version of the AFP" message every time I load Word or try accessing certain mission critical files.

Date: Tue, 02 Aug 2005 08:59:37 +1200
Apple seeded developers with a build of Mac OS X 10.4.3 for the first time late Friday. According to notes, the update includes a number of fixes related to .Mac synchronization, AFP enhancements, better handling of corrupted fonts...

14:55:00 - macam (Webcam Driver) works with Mac OS X 10.4.2! Finally.

macam works with OS X Tiger
Originally uploaded by mangee.
I haven't been following it closely, since 2003 was the last time the project actually released an update, but macam - the OS X Webcam Driver that can handle my "Cool iCam" (STV680 chipset), released Version 0.8.2 on June 30th 2005 - somewhat quietly it seems.

It's all over at:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=44375

The previous version of macam I was running was patched to run on OS X 10.3 - but broke when I got tiger.

The new version works with Quicktime capture, and iChatUSBCam for iChat AV 3.0 with a cheap (NZ$20!) USB camera, and iChat Streaming Icon for lower bandwidth streaming.

Yay.
