Living with Mangee

25th Oct, 2007

00:50:00 - A twitter cat swallowed your post.

I've been off twittering, and blog is being neglected.

In news, life and mangee things - I've been attemping to use Windows at home (last time I tried that was over 10 years ago). I have a lovely lil P4/2Ghz - a Compaq Evo D51s ex Foodstuffs. It goes ok - but swaps far too much.

Looking at swap usage it peaks at 820 Mb. So I think 1 Gig or so should make it happier. my iMac (G5 @ 2Ghz has 21.5GB ram - 0.5 Gb died the other month). THis seems much slower, but I think given the ram, it'll be ok. G5 vs P4?

Where do LJ peeps get Ram in NZ? Ascent?

Of course now with a real PC I'm not trying to get Virtual PC 3 to run .net application that got broken recently (upgrade to Hot Prospect Mail Primer lost mono/wine on Linux compatibility), and Mesh|net uses it for Banking and 'windows networking test environment'.

Of course it has iTunes and Safari, and Firefox is Safari themed. After a couple of days usage I setlled with Safari as default browser. It does seem faster. I tried IE, FireFox and Opera. Opera seemed good too. might use M2 mail application for mail here - local IMAP so it's fast, and saves bandwidth. I've also installed Google desktop for Spotlight equivalent, and thought about ObjectDock, but graphics on this are humbling. I'm sure screen refreshes are a hack in Windows, the UI is just so klutzy. Dual booting Vista (yes I, gasp, own a copy) , and it's ok, tho Aero would be nice. Few driver hassles too.

Installed Adobe AIR and the Twitter client Tweetr for my twittering, and I must say, I so like the keyboard (Compaq KB-0133) - nice key feel, though a little too much depth.

Generally all good. Identical (but crappier) build at work. Screen is crap, fuzzy compared to 20" iMac one. it's a Compaq 7500 17" CRT. Miss having volume control on keyboard, must find a hack for that.

And I miss all pervasive spell checking. Argh!

So yeah, switched to Windows (for about an hour a day at home). I feel dirty everyday.

23:40:00 - A Night Surf.. Trolling List Archives...

I am not sure if I have understood the culture of VBScript right, but it may be a problem in terms of emergence of libraries without a master plan.

AHA; you have it! Without a master plan, you are headed for chaotic
incompatibles on a global scale, MUCH WORSE than what you lament today

Link to OP in context

I can't recall how it happened, but I ended up reading through the list archives for the WHAT WG this evening, and came across this one. I smiled.

Ok, that inspired me to find out how I ended up here. Scrolling back through some 342 pages of browser history - it seems it all started with a post to the TNC list. The Gadgets vs Widgets one:
http://list.thursdaynightcurry.com/mailman/private/wellington/2007-January/005526.html

In which I referenced David Pogues "Windows ISN'T copying OS X" video, To which Mr holloway.co.nz had already meantioned XUL - which piqued my interest in how Opera was coming along with SVG/XUL, and what the status of Canvas and SVG was with Apples Widgets... etc. Which brought me across a reference to "The WHAT" - which I Googled with useless results. -- but persisted and eventually got to the What working groups spec on Web Forms 2.0 - which seemed to be a little off track with what I thought the W3C where doing. I then found it had been submitted to the W3C.. and the submission was acknowledged with comments. - Intrigued I popped over to their mailing list archives and searched for W3C... and discovered a "discussion" ensued on their mailing list....

anyway - about 3 hours later, i'm still surfing. PJs, warm bed and all...
